How Often Should You Water Succulents?

Watering succulents should be easy, right? But somehow, these little guys have a way of keeping us second-guessing. Too much water? They turn to mush. Too little? They get all shrivelled up and dramatic. So, what’s the secret? Let’s break it down.

The Golden Rule: Less is More

Succulents hate being over watered. Unlike your leafy houseplants that love a daily drink, succulents store water in their thick, juicy leaves. This means they can go much longer between waterings, usually about once every week or two.

But here’s the trick: always let the soil dry out completely before watering again. And we mean bone dry. Stick your finger in the soil, if there’s even a hint of moisture, wait a few more days.

Signs You’re Watering Wrong

Over watering (Oops, too much love!)

  • Leaves feel squishy or translucent (they’re basically drowning).

  • The plant starts looking black or mushy at the base (uh-oh, rot is setting in).

  • Leaves fall off way too easily (a distress signal!).

Under watering (Crispy, but still fixable!)

  • Leaves look wrinkled or shrivelled (they’re thirsty!).

  • Growth slows down or stops (they’re conserving energy).

  • The plant looks soft and deflated, like a sad balloon.

The Best Way to Water (No Guesswork Needed!)

If Your Succulent Has a Drainage Hole:

  • Water deeply until it runs out of the drainage hole.

  • Let the soil dry out completely before watering again (about every other week or so).

  • Use a well-draining soil mix to help excess water escape.

If Your Succulent is in a Pot Without a Drainage Hole:

  • Add just a small amount of water, directly to the soil. Using a dropper or squeeze bottle can help with better control and to prevent over watering.

  • Wait for the soil to absorb it, then stop. Less is more!

  • Stick to watering every 2-3 weeks, or when the soil feels completely dry.

Quick Watering Guide Based on Season

🌞 Spring & Summer: Every 2-3 weeks (they’re actively growing).

🍂 Autumn & Winter: Every 4-5 weeks (they go into hibernation mode).

If in doubt? Less is always better. Succulents would rather be a little thirsty than drowning in a puddle.
