Air plants (aka tillandsias) are the quirky, no-soil-needed wonders of the plant world. If you've got one or two (or five!) hanging around your home, you might be wondering: how do I actually take care of these floaty little things? Don’t worry, it’s easier than you think.
In this blog, we'll cover everything you need to know to keep your air plants healthy, hydrated, and thriving!
What Are Air Plants, Anyway?
Air plants are a type of bromeliad, and they don’t grow in soil. They absorb water and nutrients through their leaves instead of their roots. Wild, right? That makes them perfect for fun displays like hanging globes, shells, or driftwood arrangements.
They’re native to warmer, humid climates, but with the right care, they’ll feel right at home in your UK living room.
Light, Water, and Air: The Magic Trio
1. Bright, Indirect Light
Place your air plants somewhere with lots of natural light, but not direct sun. Think east or west facing windows. Direct sunlight can crisp their delicate leaves. Nobody wants a toasted tillandsia.
2. Watering Air Plants (Yes, They Still Need It!)
Despite their name, air plants can’t live on air alone. They need a good soak about once a week:
Fill a bowl with room-temperature water (Ideally rainwater, but no stress).
Dunk the plant fully and leave it for 20-30 minutes.
Shake off the excess water gently (no one likes soggy socks, and your air plant agrees).
Let it dry upside down on a towel for a few hours to prevent rot.
In hotter months or drier homes, give them an extra misting once or twice a week.
3. Good Airflow
They like fresh air, so keep them in a spot with good circulation. A stuffy bathroom might not be their vibe (unless it’s bright and steamy, then they might just move in permanently).
Temperature
Air plants like to be kept around temperatures of 10°C to 30°C. They are tough so can cope with temperatures outside of this range, but to keep your air plants happy it's best to keep this to a minimum and always protect from frost!
Display Ideas for Extra Style Points
Air plants are super flexible when it comes to decorating. Pop them into hanging terrariums, tuck them into a shell, or perch them on a piece of bark. Just make sure whatever they sit on doesn't hold water.
